A weekly rundown of the best St Mirren FC has to offer, with Misery Hunters' writer Andrew Christie

Welcome to The Back Five.

I’m Misery Hunters’ Andrew Christie. I’ll never be raging. In the lottery of picking five things of note in the past week of St Mirren FC, I’ve won the jackpot.

Let’s get into it.

Famous Last Words

After Connor Barron’s second minute opener, many watching thought the writing was on the wall in our tie against Aberdeen. It’s a film we’ve seen before. We’ve conceded more first half goals than anyone else in the league, with the majority of our games decided by the first goal.

Familiar too, were the following 90-plus minutes of domination, but without any real clinical end product. It felt like one of those days.

One thing many of us forgot to take into consideration, however, was the togetherness and character apparent in this current St Mirren side.

A 96th minute penalty masterfully won by Toyosi Olusanya and expertly dispatched by returning captain Mark O’Hara looked like it had won us a valuable point.

That wasn’t enough for our squad, though.

Picture the scene:

As Aberdeen look to mount an attack of their own, Toyosi Olusanya wins the ball deep and feeds Jonah Ayunga. The Kenyan’s powerful gait mesmerises as he crosses the halfway line and lays the ball off to Conor McMenamin. The winger looks up, considers his surroundings for a beat before pushing the ball past Richard Jensen with ease and floating a delicious cross to the back post. Mike Mandron header back across goal. Poked home by Olusanya. a 97th minute winner finished by the man who started the move. Absolute bedlam in the stands and on the pitch. Graeme Shinnie is raging. The best moment I’ve experienced in this stadium.

Boy Toy

Late equaliser in Dingwall. One year contract extension. Turning the Aberdeen game. What a week.

Somewhere in the unquantifiable space between structure and chaos, exists Toyosi Olusanya’s world. The rest of us are just living in it.

Gianni, Are You Okay?

With the IFAB annual general meeting taking place in Loch Lomond at the weekend, FIFA President Gianni Infantino took the opportunity to take in some football in Paisley.

It was a big day for Johnny Baby, who witnessed a 96th minute equaliser and a 97th minute winner in Saints’ 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

Today, I feel Buddie.

Nock Off

Once a week, Neil Warnock’s golfing holiday is interrupted by a football game. So far, none of them have gone the way of the team he manages. He doesn’t know who that is though. He doesn’t care. Even his post-match rants feel phoned in.

You’ve got to fuckin’ die for the schadenfreude.

County Lines

I, like many, simply couldn’t justify a midweek trip to Dingwall (massive shout out to the circa 200 that made the trip) and opted to watch last Tuesday’s game from the comfort of my couch, alongside my wife.

Over the course of our relationship, we’ve brought a lot to one another’s lives. On her part: musical theatre, Italian swear words and something called “oat milk”. Mine: having my mood dictated by eleven men in black and white stripes.

She doesn’t care about football in the slightest, and sitting down to watch a game with her is made all the better for it.

Her commentary highlights from Tuesday:

“That boy in the crowd has a drumstick. Two drumsticks! Oh, he also has a drum. Fair enough.”

“I'm glad he's called Keanu Baccus. It suits him.”

"When Kwon’s not on the ball I find myself wondering where Kwon is."

"This is the guy you love?". Said around six of seven times about different players.

“That red St Mirren top is quite striking… wait, is that a football pun? You can have that if you want.”

While a 1-1 draw in Dingwall isn’t exactly the type of game that will have neutrals clamouring for more St Mirren. Sharing that game together was nice.

Misery Hunters writer Andrew Christie takes a sideways look at the final week of the pre-split Premiership season.
An irreverent, sideways look at the past week in the world of St Mirren FC, with Misery Hunters writer Andrew Christie
