A 1-0 loss to the team plastered to the bottom of the league. It's gone a bit wrong here, hasn't it?

We played some decent football tbh. But it was the kind of football that would make your da's ‘Lacking That Cutting Edge’ lower back tattoo itch something awful.

Undone by a shitefest masterclass and a cheap goal from a corner. The kind of win we historically love dishing out. Frustrating. A bad day.

Red Shirt Diaries

I'm moving house at the moment. A lot of stress. A lot of stuff.

Cardboard box framed arguments interspersed with words like ‘Cetco’, ‘Clanford’ and ‘Phoenix Honda but when it was written vertically like that’.

Among the many Saints shirts I've found, this 05/06 away effort deserves a mention.

‘It’s just red’, the cynics will sneer. There’s no escaping that. However, it would be remiss of us to single out any one player or moment in what was a cumulatively awful day at the office. So what better time to take the opportunity to praise one of my favourite additions to St Mirren this season?

Potentially unfairly judged upon signing, Mandron is far from the target man battering ram many assumed. His 8 goals in all competitions (including 2 in his last 3 games) paint the picture of an adept finisher, but massively underrated is his ability to drop deep and link up play. His skill on the ball, intelligence of movement and keen eye for a pass - best exemplified in the build-up to Alex Greive’s goal against Aberdeen earlier in the season - have won him many fans who initially thought him to be simply another Curtis Main.

We have proved in recent weeks we are a better side with the big striker in the team. A penalty miss in a game we could still be playing now without having scored won't define his, or anyone’s season.

Goodwin Out

Semantic satiation is a psychological phenomenon in which repeating a word or phrase over and over causes it to lose all meaning, turning it into mere sounds. The image of Jim Goodwin holding aloft the 2013 League Cup was my phone background for so long it got to the point I couldn’t see his face as a face anymore. Just pixels. Data. My word though, it was beautiful.

When the former club captain returned in June 2019 as manager, The Narrative was put fully into motion. Although his time in the St Mirren dugout was often streaky - it felt like Goodwin and his team were starting to build something truly exciting in Paisley.

The (well-covered) circumstances regarding Goodwin’s departure to Aberdeen - two years ago to the day of writing - left a bad taste in the mouths of many. While much of that taste was washed away wrapping our tongues around the Doric word for schadenfreude, there remains a complicated feeling in Paisley towards its former hero.

The fondness will return though, in time. I’m sure of it.

Until then though Goody, it’s class watching you get rattled on the telly on a Friday.

Robbo rage

It's hard to see someone else living out your dreams, isn't it?

The scenes in the away end as Marc McNulty’s bundled a 96th minute winner into the back of the net gave St Mirren fans an agonising taste of what might have been, rounding off a pretty torrid week for the Paisley side.
