Christmas Day for club Twitter admins. Crowd-based jibes, keen analysis and more “in the hat” emojis than you can shake a stick at.

Standing between St Mirren and the last 16 of the competition was a dogged Queen of the South side. Dominant without being spectacular, Saints’ 1-0 win was hard fought from a group demonstrably feeling the effects of their week of double sessions in the Spanish sun.

Still, sometimes the most worn platitudes are the comfiest, and we get to don ours sat in front of the fifth-round draw. Two wins from Hampden. We have seen what a cup run can do for a club like ours and its community and can you tell the point I've just looked up at the TV, seen we've drawn Celtic in the next round and lost all faith in this entry? I mean come on man.

Debutant Balls

Celtic loanee Kwon Hyeok-kyu made his competitive debut on Saturday and looked every inch the player Celtic believed they were signing in the summer.

The South Korean U23 cap looked technically impressive, positionally intelligent and a real asset both on and off the ball, running the game from the base of Saints’ midfield.

Kwon is straight out of the Sergio Busquets mould. He is The Hotelier to the Spanish midfielder’s American Football. The type of player that sees the game so very well, for whom pace is something to be imposed upon the ball. Who quietly makes everything work around him.

Not a player easily measured or deciphered, won’t be the subject of many YouTube compilations, but absolute catnip for people with moustaches and New Balance shoes.

Really excited about this one.

Socceroos Waltz On

Saints’ fanbase watched on with delight last Thursday as Keanu Baccus’ Australia confirmed their Round of 16 place in the Asian Cup with a 1-0 win over Syria. Well, some of us watched on. Some of us refuse to learn what ‘TrillerTV’ is, but we move.

While Baccus only featured as a 57th-minute sub in the Socceroos victory, a game-winning man-of-the-match turn by the Saints midfielder in a 1-0 opening-day win over India meant that gaffer Graham Arnold was able to save his stars for games to come.

While the selfish wish would be for Baccus’ return to happen as soon as possible, we should take immense pride in seeing a player grow his name game by game.

Something Old is New Again

Adidas has gone all in with the 90s nostalgia of late, from their retro international range to the return of one of the game’s most iconic boots.

The Predator 24 blends the iconic colourway and aesthetic DNA that took the footballing world by storm some 30 years ago with a modern lightweight design. Most importantly though, the iconic foldover tongue is back. Old school and new age all at once.

Alex Gogic debuted a pair of these in Saints’ 1-0 over Queen of the South. Scored the winning goal. Looked class.

My First Match

When asked why I became a St Mirren fan, my answer stays the same. Vertical stripes are slimming and my dad was driving that way anyway. But truthfully, being a supporter of the Saints, or any of Scotland’s ‘smaller’ clubs is not a position we should be made to justify or defend – despite others’ insistence.

That is why The Supporter Liaison Officer and Northbank, Kids Mural Project "My First Match"– completed this week – is so important.

The murals will “provide a legacy to young buddies in the family stand for many years to come” and instil a sense of pride within young fans for their club and their community.
