Hearts fans. There they are, there. The maroon of their tops illuminating their necks red as they try and explain to me why the pies and the pints in their Gorgie pub are the same temperature.

Over the years, we've accumulated an impressive catalogue of victories against the Jambos that range from the heroic to the hilarious. Some were footballing masterclasses, others were pure, unadulterated chaos. All were A Right Good Laugh. And I'd just like to say before we start that 1986 was objectively brilliant and hilarious and we'll draw a line under it now.

Here are six of the best.

Also, I’m sorry I said that thing about your boyfriend back at the start. Hurt people hurt people y’know?

Anyway, here we go!

6 - St Mirren 2-0 Hearts. SPFL Premiership. St Mirren Park. 24th November 2018

Adam Hammill didn’t do a whole lot in a St Mirren jersey. In fact, he did exactly three things. Two of those being absolutely batshite ridiculous goals against Edinburgh sides.

His goal (the first of a brace) in Saints’ 2-0 win over Hearts in November 2018 was up there with the best I’ve seen in person. A lofted, 45-yard half volley that sailed over a helpless Bobby Zlamal into the Hearts net. You’re not allowed to score goals like this anymore. Not since woke.

A couple of weeks later Hammill would score from inside his own half away at Hibs. Fair play.

5 - Hearts 0-1 St Mirren. League Cup Semi Final. Fir Park. 2nd February 2010.

St Mirren vs Hearts. League Cup 2010 Semi Final 2010. A Monday Night Lit tatty field of a Fir Park pitch. Big Billy Mehmet with a peach of a goal just after half time, curling one past Marian Kello from outside the box. Could've had more too - Andy Dorman should've buried his chance! Hearts barely laid a glove on us that night as we booked a place in our first League Cup final since 1955. We were dreaming. Mind you, maybe let’s not talk about what Rangers would go on to do to those dreams…

4 - Hearts 0-2 St Mirren. SPFL Premiership. Tynecastle. 8th April 2023.

Our first win at Tynecastle in a decade, and instrumental in securing our first ever top-half finish in the league’s current format.

From a St Mirren point of view, the game was a masterclass in Robboball. Ceding possession for organisation and discipline off the ball. Pressing high, forcing mistakes and playing on the counter. Highlights of the game included Curtis Main bullying Kye Rawles, and retiring Robert Snodgrass on the spot, as well as Alex Gogic scoring a second he knew nothing about before running straight to the Hearts fans.

Robbie Neilson was sacked in the game’s immediate aftermath, joining Daniel Stendel and, more recently, Stevie Naismith in the list of Hearts managers to receive their P45s after meeting the Saints.

One of those days where tactics and patter meet in perfect harmony. So much fun.

3 - St Mirren 1-0 Hearts. SPFL Premiership. St Mirren Park. 10th March 2020.

If you shouted the phrase “demoted not relegated” so much that you strained your voice box and had to take time off work, would you tell your boss the real reason? Or lie and say something less embarrassing like you got your head stuck in a bucket of bats and started a global pandemic?

The question posed by Jon Obika as he sent Hearts down to the Championship in 2020. Really really funny.

2 - St Mirren 2-1 Hearts. Scottish Cup Semi Final. Hampden Park. 11th April 1987

Battering Hearts on the way to a Scottish Cup win? That’s very nice and we should do it again I reckon.

1 - St Mirren 3-2 Hearts. League Cup Final. Hampden Park. 17th March 2013.

In a twist that will surprise none of you familiar with my work, Jim Goodwin used to be my absolute boy. The image of him lifting the 2013 League Cup trophy will forever be seared onto my psyche. A haunted image burned into a long-dead television screen.

What a day this was at Hampden! Ryan Stevenson's deflected shot putting Hearts ahead and our hearts sinking. But Esme Goncalves changed everything when he levelled before the break. Then there was Thommo - proper club legend - smashing us in front right after halftime. And Conor Newton's thunderbolt for the third... pure magic! Sure, Hearts grabbed another late on, but we weren't to be denied. Our first major silverware since 1987. Best footballing day of my life.

Author’s bio

Andrew Christie is a football writer with a gorgeous brain and huge thinking.
